QUILTS OF VALOR
WANTED:
WARTIME MACHINE QUILTERS WHO WANT TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE.
Facts
Our nation has been at war since November 2001. More than 1.5 million men and women have served in Iraq/Afghanistan, with the inevitable casualties. As of October, 2008, the Quilts of Valor Foundation has awarded more than 18,000 Quilts of Valor (QOVS) to our War Wounded through military and VA medical centers nationwide.
The Need
Our nation learned a hard lesson from our Vietnam Vets on how not to treat our returning veterans. Our Foundation has taken this lesson to our sewing and quilting machines, making beautiful wartime quilts called Quilts of Valor for our War Wounded. These Quilts of Valor are tangible reminders that their wartime service, sacrifice and valor are not forgotten. To date, there are still tens of thousands more War Wounded who merit a Quilt of Valor. Our goal is twofold: to make these wartime quilts and find these Warriors.
What You Can Do
As a machine quilter, you can support our War Wounded in a personal and meaningful way. The high-quality Quilt of Valor you make will become a lifetime source of pride and comfort to our War Wounded. Quilts of Valor, by their very nature, will reverently be passed from one generation to the next as family heirlooms.
Involvement Means
Join the list of volunteer machine quilters and quilt a Quilt Of Valor (size 50" x 60" up to

72" x 90") when you have time. 54" x 67" is an ideal size!
Quilt the lap-sized top or send to a volunteer quilter.
Use quality thread and batting.
Do What You Enjoy Most
You team up with a quilt piecer and choose the design that best suits the quilt. Many quilt piecers have never used the services of a machine quilter, so your quilting not only provides a way to cover our War Wounded but has the potential to be viewed by quilt piecers nationwide.

We, as Quilt Show Co-Chairmen are encouraging all of our members to help in any way that they can, whether it is donating patriotic fabric, cutting out the patterns, piecing, or quilting. Our nationwide call has gone out and to date we have received 11 quilt tops, 1 fully finished quilt, and many more promised from all over the United States. Two of our mini groups are in the process of making several more quilts too!
So Jeri and Sue would like to appeal to you to work on Quilts of Valor. These will be presented to local veterans at the show and even though we have sent out the call nationwide, local quilts would have special meaning. Consider making a QOV in addition to the community quilts you are working on. Or petition your mini group to build a few. Remember, we need good quality, 100% cotton fabric, preferably in patriotic colors; a label with the name of the quilt, name(s) of piecers and quilters, dedication, presented to __________, date, etc.; a pillow case for presentation; and an optional journal highlighting the quilt's journey. For complete details, see the website:
http://www.qovf.org/.

NOTICE NOTICE NOTICE

We will be having a special presentation at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, June 6th of the Quilts of Valor. The Veterans Administration along with several wounded warriors will be on hand and many beautiful Quilts of Valor will be presented. You don’t want to miss this presentation! You will never forget it!
___________

"God Bless America" Quilt Display

will be hanging at the show. Judy Howard is owner of Buckboard Antique Quilts and curator of the "God Bless America" Quilt Display. These are miniature quilts that will tour the United States for three years. There is also a good chance that the patterns and stories will be published by Judy Howard, Dorcas Publishing, award-winning author of three quilt books.
"How do I love America? Let me quilt the ways"

is the theme of Judy Howard’s "God Bless America" Quilt Contest and traveling exhibits to benefit wounded soldiers. These traditional or pictorial 22" quilts created by children and adults capture the essence of "America the Beautiful" by paying tribute to our American Heroes, Troops, Presidents and depicting "Liberty and Justice for all," or expressing flag-waving loyalty to our "One Nation Under God."

"Blanket America in Stitches of Comfort, Patriotism and Hugs for our Heroes."
All profits from the rental fee for this display go to non-profit groups who provide quilts for the wounded and families of fallen soldiers — those most in need of the touch of love that quilts represent.
